Read the Bible on the web!
In the New Year, every member of the VPC family is encouraged to grow in the habit of reading the
Bible. The Sunday bulletins will provide a list of Daily Bible
Readings, and these readings will be arranged so that one can
read through the Bible (both the New Testament and the Old
Testament) during the year. Sunday messages throughout the year
will be offered from portions of the Bible corresponding with
the suggested Daily Bible Readings.
We’re looking forward to starting small groups where people can
regularly come together to discuss the Scriptures in a loving,
informal setting. Many of the Wednesday Night Live classes will
feature ways of gaining a deeper appreciation and understanding
of the Bible.
As we look forward to this journey together in 2008, consider
getting a Study Bible if you don’t already have one (maybe this
is would be a great Christmas gift for that hard-to-buy-for
person in your family!). Study Bibles offer a variety of helps
to make the language and culture of the Bible more
understandable. The most popular Study Bible is the NIV Study
Bible (available on-line and at most bookstores), but it’s
always a fun adventure to visit a bookstore yourself and compare
the various editions of Bibles. Our church library also has a
variety of Bibles to explore.
Another important factor in choosing a Bible is finding a
translation that you enjoy reading. The NIV and NRSV are both
scholarly translations that are quite readable. Eugene
Peterson’s The Message brings the ancient text to life in a
fresh contemporary paraphrase. And a few people will prefer the
lofty poetry of the King James Version, though its old English
dialect makes for a more challenging read. |
